The Northern Wei cut the Yungang grottoes from 460 — 252 caves with 51,000 statues showing Indian, Persian and Greek influence arriving in China along the Silk Road. Nearby, the Hanging Monastery has clung to a cliff for 1,500 years on wooden beams driven into the rock, holding Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian shrines in the same building.
