Hongcun

The Crescent Pond
Iconic VillagesCities on WaterNature Gateways
Portrait

Hongcun was planned in the Ming dynasty in the shape of an ox: a hill for the head, two trees as horns, a canal system as the intestines and a moon-shaped pond as the stomach, delivering water to every house before it reaches the lake. The whitewashed walls and black tiles are the Huizhou merchant style, funded by salt fortunes made far away.
