The Giant Buddha
Sacred CitiesNature Gateways
Portrait

A monk began the seventy-one-metre Buddha in 713 to protect boats at the confluence of three rivers, and the rubble from the carving filled the current enough that the water genuinely did become safer — the project took ninety years and outlived him. His ears are seven metres long, and a drainage system hidden in the folds of the robe has kept the sandstone from eroding for thirteen centuries.
