The Transfiguration Church of 1714 stands on an island in Lake Onega with twenty-two aspen-shingled domes and was built, by tradition, using only an axe — the carpenter is said to have thrown his into the lake afterwards, saying there would never be another like it. Aspen shingles silver with age and the whole structure was restored from within between 2001 and 2020 without dismantling it.
