Kandy held out against the Portuguese and Dutch and fell to the British only in 1815, and the Temple of the Tooth beside its artificial lake holds a relic that has conferred the right to rule the island for centuries. Attend a puja rather than a tour — three a day, drums and offerings — and stay for the Esala Perahera in August if the dates allow.
