Lijiang

Lijiang was built without walls — the ruling Mu family's surname would have become the character for besieged if enclosed — and instead runs on a canal system fed from Black Dragon Pool, with water flowing past every house. The Naxi keep Dongba, the only pictographic script still in use anywhere, and the town was rebuilt after a 1996 earthquake that killed three hundred people.
