A Japanese monk carrying a Guanyin statue home in 916 found his boat blocked by lotus flowers off this island and took it as a sign to leave her there — the island became the bodhisattva's seat and one of the four sacred mountains, though it rises only three hundred metres from the sea. Pilgrims arrive by ferry, and the thirty-three-metre statue faces the water.
