Miyajima

Itsukushima shrine is built on stilts over the water because the island itself was considered a god, and commoners were not permitted to set foot on it — they approached by boat through the torii, which stands in the sea. Births and deaths were prohibited to preserve ritual purity, and there is still no cemetery on the island.
