Wutai is the seat of Manjushri and the oldest of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, with fifty-three monasteries across five terraced summits; Nanchan and Foguang temples, from 782 and 857, are the earliest surviving timber buildings in the country, found in 1937 by the architect Liang Sicheng and his wife when everyone believed none had survived. Tibetan and Han Buddhism are practised side by side here.
