Suzhou's canals were dug in 514 BC and its gardens — nine of them UNESCO-listed — were built by scholars and officials as compressed landscapes, where a courtyard of a few hundred square metres contains mountains, water and forest by implication rather than scale. The city produced most of imperial China's silk, and the technique is still taught in its embroidery institute.
