Tongli has forty-nine stone bridges and fifteen canals dividing it into seven islands, and its Retreat and Reflection Garden was built in 1885 by an official dismissed for corruption — the name is his stated intention to withdraw and consider his faults, which nobody was obliged to believe. The town remains quieter than its neighbours because it opened later.
