Wudang
The Taoist Peaks
Portrait
The Yongle emperor spent thirteen years and three hundred thousand workers building the Wudang complex from 1412 as an imperial statement in Taoist form, with the Golden Hall — cast in bronze and gilded, at the summit — hauled up in pieces. The internal martial arts, including tai chi, are traditionally traced to the monk Zhang Sanfeng here, and schools still train on the mountain.
