Ladakh lies behind the main Himalayan range, which takes the monsoon out of the air before it arrives — the result is high desert with barley grown only where meltwater reaches it, and monasteries on crags above the fields. Leh was a staging post on the caravan route between Punjab and Central Asia, and the road in from Manali crosses passes above five thousand metres.
