Zhouzhuang
First of the Water Towns
Portrait
Zhouzhuang has been a canal town since 1086 and became the first of the Jiangnan water towns to open to tourism in the 1980s, largely because the painter Chen Yifei's canvas of its double bridge sold at a New York auction and made it famous. Around sixty per cent of its houses date from the Ming and Qing.
