Nicosia
The Divided Capital
Portrait
A UN buffer zone has run through Nicosia since 1974, in places a few metres wide, and inside it a street of shops stands as it was left — cars from the period still in the showrooms. Crossings opened in 2003 and the Venetian walls encircle both halves; the city is the only capital anywhere still split by a recognised ceasefire line.
