Narva

Two Castles, One River
Border CitiesFortress Cities
Portrait

Narva's Hermann Castle and Ivangorod fortress stand on opposite banks within artillery range of each other, built by Danes and by Ivan III respectively, and the river between them is now the external border of the European Union. The city is over ninety per cent Russian-speaking, and its baroque old town was destroyed in 1944 and replaced with Soviet blocks.
