Bonifacio
The Chalk Citadel
Portrait
Bonifacio stands on limestone cliffs undercut by the sea, with the old town perched on a strip that is visibly eroding, and its harbour runs 1.5 kilometres inland through a cleft in the rock. Sardinia is twelve kilometres across the strait, and the King of Aragon's staircase — 187 steps cut into the cliff face — was, by legend, dug in a single night during a siege.
