Bordeaux
Wine Civilisation
Portrait
Bordeaux shipped wine to England from the twelfth century, when Eleanor of Aquitaine's marriage put the region under the English crown for three hundred years, and the eighteenth-century city — the largest ensemble of classical stone façades in France after Paris — was paid for by that trade. The 1855 classification, drawn up for an exhibition and meant to be temporary, still governs prices today.
