Nearly half of Tübingen's population is connected to the university, founded in 1477, and the seminary produced Hegel, Schelling and Hölderlin as roommates. Hölderlin spent his last thirty-six years in a tower on the Neckar, cared for by a carpenter's family after his mind failed; the tower is a museum and the punts pass beneath it.
