St Andrews
Golf & the Grey Sea
Portrait
The university dates from 1413, and the Old Course beside it has been played since the fifteenth century — the Royal and Ancient wrote the rules of golf here and the eighteen-hole round became standard because St Andrews had eighteen. Students wear red gowns, walk the pier on Sundays and, by tradition, do not step on the initials of a martyr burned outside St Salvator's in 1528.
