Princeton
A Campus as Parkland
Portrait
Princeton was founded in 1746 and rebuilt from the 1890s in Collegiate Gothic — deliberately aged stone, quadrangles and towers designed to suggest Oxford on the New Jersey farmland. Einstein lived here for twenty-two years at the Institute for Advanced Study, walking to work down Mercer Street, and the eating clubs on Prospect Avenue remain the strangest social institution in American education.
