Cardinal Cisneros founded the university in 1499 and laid out the city around it — the first purpose-built university town, a model exported to Spanish America — and its scholars produced the Complutensian Polyglot Bible, printed in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Aramaic in parallel columns. Cervantes was born here in 1547, and the house is a museum on the main arcaded street.
