Monks began climbing these sandstone towers in the fourteenth century and hauled everything up by rope and net — including, until the 1920s, the monks themselves; six of the twenty-four monasteries still function. Take the steps rather than the road where you can, go early before the tour buses, and dress as the monasteries require or you will be turned back at the gate.
