Mount Athos

Twenty monasteries occupy a peninsula that governs itself as an autonomous state within Greece, keeps Byzantine time on some clocks and the Julian calendar throughout, and admits only men — a hundred Orthodox and ten others each day, by permit applied for months ahead. Those who go walk between monasteries and sleep where they are received; the rest see the walls from a boat.
