Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on a cliff seventy metres above the water and counts among the six sanctuaries Balinese Hinduism treats as the island's spiritual pillars. Surfers found the reef beneath it in the early 1970s and a film carried the wave abroad; temple and break are both still in daily use, by different people, at different hours.
