Kilkenny

Kilkenny was the seat of the Irish parliament in the 1640s, and the Medieval Mile from the castle to St Canice's Cathedral passes almost everything the city built in four centuries of stone. The round tower beside the cathedral is climbable; drink where the brewing has run since 1710, and time a visit to the arts festival in August.
