Spanish potters brought maiolica technique here in the sixteenth century and it became talavera poblana, still made under a denomination of origin and covering façades across the city. The Mexican victory over French forces on 5 May 1862 was won outside Puebla — the date is a minor holiday in Mexico and a large one in the United States, which puzzles Mexicans.
