Gorizia / Nova Gorica
A Square Cut in Half
Portrait
The 1947 treaty put the border through Gorizia, leaving the station in Yugoslavia and the town in Italy, so Tito built Nova Gorica on the other side from nothing. The line ran across Transalpina square with a fence down the middle until 2004; the paving now marks it, and the two cities are jointly European Capital of Culture in 2025.
