Vyborg was Swedish for four centuries, Finnish between the wars and Soviet from 1944, and each left something — a thirteenth-century castle on an island, Alvar Aalto's library of 1935 with its undulating wooden ceiling, and the Soviet housing that followed. The medieval street plan survives, unusually for the region.
