Lucca's sixteenth-century walls were never needed for defence and were converted into a tree-lined promenade four kilometres round, wide enough to cycle. The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro follows the oval of a Roman arena exactly, with medieval houses built into its structure, and Puccini was born a few streets away.
