Kanazawa
Gold Leaf & Gardens
Portrait
Kanazawa produces almost all of Japan's gold leaf, beaten to a ten-thousandth of a millimetre by a process the humidity here suits, and it gilded Kyoto's temples. The Maeda lords spent their wealth on crafts rather than armies to avoid alarming the shogun, which is why Kenroku-en garden and the geisha districts survive, and the city was never bombed.
