Tokugawa Ieyasu is buried at Toshogu, a shrine so densely carved and gilded that it breaks every rule of Japanese restraint — which was the point, since the shogunate was making an argument about power. Walk the avenue of cedars planted in the 1600s, then go up to Lake Chuzenji and the Kegon falls, which is what the priests came here for first.
