Swakopmund
Germany on the Namib
Portrait
Swakopmund was founded in 1892 as German South West Africa's main port and still has its Lutheran church, its Kaiserliche Realschule and streets named in German — the town looks like Bavaria dropped on a desert coast. The Benguela current keeps the sea at fifteen degrees and the fog rolling in, and the dunes of the Namib begin at the edge of the last street.
