Tashkurgan means stone fortress, and the ruined citadel on the plateau at 3,100 metres guarded the route Ptolemy described as the Stone Tower, the midpoint of the Silk Road. The Khunjerab pass to Pakistan is the highest paved border crossing in the world at 4,693 metres, and Afghanistan and Tajikistan are within sixty kilometres.
