The Kathmandu valley held three rival kingdoms — Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur — whose kings competed by building, which is why three durbar squares stand within a few kilometres of each other. The 2015 earthquake killed nearly nine thousand people in Nepal and destroyed many of the towers; reconstruction has used traditional joinery and is still under way.
