Eindhoven
Light into Design
Portrait
Philips founded a light bulb factory here in 1891 and grew it until the city was effectively its campus; when production moved abroad, Eindhoven turned the empty works into design studios — Strijp-S is now a creative quarter, and the Design Academy's graduates are visible in museums worldwide. ASML, which makes the machines that make advanced chips, is based next door and is among Europe's most valuable companies.
