The Joanina library of 1728 keeps a colony of bats that emerge at night to eat the insects that would otherwise destroy the books, and the tables are covered in leather each evening for the obvious reason. Coimbra's fado is distinct from Lisbon's — sung by men, in the black capes students still wear, and applauded by coughing rather than clapping.
