Metropolitan Iona built the Rostov kremlin in the 1670s not as a fortress but as an image of the heavenly city — walls, towers and churches arranged for effect rather than defence. Its thirteen bells, the largest weighing thirty-two tonnes, were cast to sound together as a single instrument, and the peals composed for them in the seventeenth century are still rung.
