Carrying coals to Newcastle became a phrase because the Tyne shipped so much of it that bringing more was absurd, and the river's banks built ships and locomotives — Stephenson's works were here. Seven bridges cross the gorge within a kilometre, including a tilting footbridge of 2001 that rotates on its axis to let boats through.
