York
The Minster Walls
Portrait
York was Eboracum to the Romans, Jorvik to the Danes who took it in 866, and the medieval city built on both — the Minster stands on the Roman headquarters, and the Jorvik centre is built over an excavation that found timber houses and Viking latrines intact in the wet soil. Three kilometres of city wall are walkable, and the Shambles is a street of overhanging butchers' houses.
