Mardin
Balcony over Mesopotamia
Portrait
Mardin steps down a limestone hill in tiers so that every house sees the Mesopotamian plain, and its churches, mosques and madrasas belong to Syriac Christians, Kurds, Arabs and Turks who have shared the ridge for centuries. One main street runs the length of the ridge:, visit Deyrulzafaran monastery outside town, and eat at a terrace facing the plain at dusk.
