Mackinac banned automobiles in 1898 after they frightened the horses, and the ban holds: freight moves by dray, the ambulance is the only motor vehicle, and the main street smells accordingly. The island was a fur-trading centre and then a fort contested by Britain and America, and eighty per cent of it is now state park.
