Cannery Row
Portrait
Monterey was the capital of Alta California under Spain and Mexico, then the sardine capital of the world until the fishery collapsed in the 1950s — the event Steinbeck wrote and the reason Cannery Row stood empty. The aquarium opened in a former cannery in 1984 and is now the finest in the country; go at opening, then drive the Seventeen-Mile Drive to Carmel.
