Hewlett and Packard began in a rented garage on Addison Avenue in 1938, and Stanford's decision to lease its land to graduates' companies turned orchards into the densest concentration of technology capital on earth. There is little to see and a great deal to understand: the garage, the campus, and Sand Hill Road, where the money that built the industry still sits.
