Three Holy Peaks

Portrait

The three snow peaks of Yading were consecrated to bodhisattvas by the fifth Karmapa in the fourteenth century, and Joseph Rock photographed them for National Geographic in 1928 — an article that is said to have given James Hilton the idea for Shangri-La. The pilgrimage circuit around them runs above four thousand metres and takes three days.
