Rishikesh has been a place of ascetic practice for centuries, and the Beatles' stay at the Maharishi's ashram in 1968 — where they wrote much of the White Album — made it a destination for a different kind of seeker. The town is vegetarian and alcohol-free by law, two suspension bridges carry pilgrims and motorbikes across the Ganges, and the rafting starts upstream.
