Ubud

Ubud sits among subak rice terraces irrigated by a cooperative system of water temples that has managed the flow democratically since the ninth century and is UNESCO-listed. Balinese Hinduism requires daily offerings — small palm-leaf trays left on thresholds, shrines and dashboards — and the town's dance and gamelan performances are temple practice rather than shows, though they now serve both.
