Stresa
The Borromean Islands
Portrait
The Borromeo family have owned the islands off Stresa since the 1500s, and Isola Bella carries a baroque palace and a terraced garden built on what was a rock with a fishing village — the whole island was reshaped to the plan. Hemingway set part of A Farewell to Arms in the Grand Hotel des Îles Borromées, and the room is numbered.
