Hadrian built a villa of thirty buildings here in the second century, importing the architecture of provinces he had visited; fourteen centuries later a cardinal built the Villa d'Este above it with five hundred fountains driven entirely by gravity. Both fit one day, in that order, and note that the later garden quarried the earlier villa for its marble.
