Taos Pueblo
The Thousand-Year Pueblo
Portrait
Taos Pueblo has been inhabited for over a thousand years and is the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage site and a National Historic Landmark; the multi-storey adobe houses have no electricity or running water by the community's own decision. In 1970 the Pueblo won back Blue Lake, sacred to them, after a sixty-four-year legal campaign against the federal government.
